Last year the Strategic People Conference, ‘Thoughtful leadership for a healthy culture’, prompted lots of conversations about the importance of creating a supportive environment, to improve resilience among staff and volunteers in the sector.
In 2020 we turn our attention to ‘Success through an inclusive and supporting culture’.
Our workforce spans multiple generations, and works in diverse communities. We need to actively embrace equality, diversity and inclusion, to attract the right people, and remain relevant. The mix of age, ethnicity, disabilities, gender, roles, background and location, means that real care and thought needs to be given to give everyone equal chance to develop and succeed.
Susan Cordingley, Director of Strategy and Operations, NCVO, wrote in the People Count 2019 report, ‘It’s important that we get the right policies in place now to ensure that the senior leaders of the future are drawn from the whole breadth of backgrounds among our employees [volunteers], not just a section of them.’
We need to develop our approaches to recruitment, training and communication to attract good people and to keep them. Leaders must respond to and anticipate change. HR and Volunteer leaders play an integral part in making things happen and the conference is a place to talk, challenge and learn.
“Really brilliant, thank you, I’ll be back next year!”
We open with our keynote speaker, Karl Wilding, recently appointed CEO of NCVO, who champions the message, how we do things is just as important as what we do.
Here are a few words from Karl:
“My work at NCVO is to champion the voluntary sector and volunteering. We believe that voluntary organisations and the volunteers they and others engage, make a positive difference to the world – and we want to support them to make an even bigger difference. I lead a group of talented, committed people that create robust, innovative, policy and research, advice and support, and campaigns for the long term. We work across sectors, supporting both voluntary organisations and volunteering, wherever it takes place.”
We are delighted to have the support of our partners and look forward to welcoming their members to the conference. Thank you to Association of Mental Health Providers, Association of Volunteer Managers, Charities HR Network, Charity Comms, Heritage Volunteer Group, National Care Forum, Voluntary Organisations Disability Group.
